Technical Topic 04

A safe cross-reference is a documented engineering comparison, not a search result that happens to share a package and nominal voltage. This path shows how to move from manufacturer families and current first-party documents to a conditional shortlist and final validation.

Distributor stock, copied parameter tables and visually similar markings do not prove lifecycle, qualification, construction or electrical equivalence.

Use the map to locate relevant manufacturers and series without treating a broad family name as evidence for an exact part.

02 Source

Technical resources and datasheet library

Prioritize current manufacturer pages, formal datasheets, application notes, qualification documents, standards and relevant papers.

03 Define

Terminology and product boundaries

Confirm that the candidate devices share a genuinely comparable construction and role before matching electrical fields.

04 Normalize

Parameters and test conditions

Normalize units and names only after verifying the underlying definitions, test current, waveform, temperature and tolerance.

05 Compare

How to cross-reference MLVs safely

Compare package, working voltage, capacitance, varistor and clamping behavior, pulse evidence, leakage, environmental range, qualification and assembly limits.

Minimum comparison record

Store the source URL and document revision, exact series and part number, parameter definition, test conditions, package drawing, termination, qualification scope and unresolved differences. A blank field should remain blank rather than being inferred from another series.

Decision boundary

The shortlist is complete only when the remaining differences are visible. Form, fit and function claims require drawing-level review, compatible electrical evidence, sample testing on the target PCB and any customer-specific approval process.

A cross-reference may be suitable for evaluation without being a drop-in equivalent. Use conditional language until current documents and target-system tests close the remaining gaps.
