Automotive and Industrial Interface Protection

Technical Topic 03

Interface protection begins with the path by which a transient enters the system and the electrical limits of the transceiver or sensor node. Automotive and industrial interfaces may share component types, but their normal voltages, cable environments, pulse definitions and qualification requirements are not interchangeable.

The application pages below explain design boundaries and validation questions. They do not assert that one protection device fits every transceiver, network topology or OEM test plan.

Choose the protected interface

Start with the circuit family, then confirm the exact transceiver limits, cable model, coupling method and required immunity test.

Evaluate common-mode and differential stress, line capacitance, transceiver limits, multi-element topology and the location of the protection network.

Review single-wire interface voltage, bias conditions, transient exposure and the difference between interface ESD and longer-duration vehicle pulses.

Placement questions

Identify the connector, return path, shield or chassis relationship, protected IC limits and the trace segment between the suppressor and the vulnerable node. Layout inductance can dominate a fast transient even when the component rating appears suitable.

Test questions

Record the standard edition, contact or air discharge, coupling method, source impedance, waveform, level, polarity, repetition and functional performance criteria. ESD, EFT, surge and automotive pulses are different evidence categories.
